What does it mean to be certified organic/Organic Certification?
       Certified organic means that organic product has been certified by an accredited certification agency and the product has been produced and processed according to National/International standard for organic production.

What are the penalties for the mis-use of the term "Organic"?
       Any operator who knowingly or un-knowingly mis-uses the organic labels will be de-certified by KSOCA.

What is conversion?
       The process of changing an agricultural farm from conventional to organic farm. This is also called transition.

What is meant by inspection?
       Shall include the site visit to verify that the performance of an operation is in accordance with the Organic production or processing standards.

What is parallel production?
       Shall mean any production where the same unit is growing, breeding, handling or processing the same products both in a certified organic and a non-certified organic system. Similarly a situation with “organic” and “in conversion” production of the same product is also parallel production.

What is Meant by KSOCA?
       Karnataka State Organic Certification Agency (KSOCA) is a Organic Certification Division of Karnataka State Seed and Organic Certification (KSSOCA).

What is NPOP?
       It is the National Program for Organic Production (NPOP), launched by Ministry of Commerce & Industries, Govt. of India. It provides information on standards for Organic Production Systems, criteria and procedure for accreditation of inspection & certification Bodies, use of National Organic Logo and other Regulations.

What is NSOP?
       NSOP means National Standards for Organic Production, formulated by Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India for National Program for Organic Production (NPOP). It includes standards for governing its Organic Production and Processes as well as the regulations for use of the National Organic Certification Mark.

What is conventional agriculture?
       Farming systems dependent on input of artificial fertilizers and/or chemicals and pesticides or which are not in conformity with the basic standards of organic production.

What is organic agriculture?
       It is a system of farm design and management to create an eco system, which can achieve sustainable productivity without the use of artificial external inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

How long   organic certificate is valid for?
       Organic certificate remains valid for one year only, it has to be renewed every year.

What is internal control system?
       A documented quality assurance system that allows the external certification body to delegate the inspection of individual group members to a body identified from within the operators of the group.

What is transaction/import certificate?
       Document issued by a certification body declaring that the specified lot or consignment of goods is derived from production and / or processing system that has been certified.

Whether irradiation of organic food is allowed or not?
        No. Irradiation in the production and handling of organic food is prohibited under NSOP.

What is part conversion?
        Shall be when part of a conventional farm or unit has already been converted to organic production or processing and a part is in the process of conversion.

Where can I get a copy of the National Programme for Organic Production?
       You can get a copy of NPOP from KSOCA along with application or you can download it from the website of www.apeda.com.

How long shall it take for my land to be certified organic?
       That depends on the history of your operations and your current compliances with certification standards and regulations. It takes two years for annual crops and three years for perennial crops to be certified as organic.

What is Conversion Period?
       The time between the first inspection and the certification of crops as organic.
